A city with genuine character
St. John’s is one of the oldest cities in North America, and it wears that history proudly. Downtown is famous for its rows of brightly painted houses — the “Jellybean Row” homes — stepping down the hills toward the harbour. It’s walkable and lively, full of independent shops, restaurants, and pubs (George Street is legendary). But what surprises newcomers most is how genuinely friendly it is — people here look out for one another, and it doesn’t take long to feel like you belong.
Neighbourhoods for every stage of life
Part of what I love about selling here is the variety. Downtown and the east end — areas like Georgestown, Churchill Square, and around Rennie’s River — offer character homes and walkability. The west end and neighbourhoods like Cowan Heights lean more spacious and family-oriented. And newer subdivisions such as Southlands, Kenmount Terrace, and Airport Heights give you modern builds and bigger lots. Each pocket has its own feel, and finding the one that fits your life is honestly half the fun.
The ocean is never far
This might be the best part of living here. Signal Hill and Cabot Tower look out over the North Atlantic; the East Coast Trail winds for hundreds of kilometres along the coast; and Cape Spear — the easternmost point in North America — is a short drive away for sunrise. Add the tiny fishing village and brewery at Quidi Vidi, and you get a city where you can have brunch downtown and be walking a cliffside trail twenty minutes later.
A market that still makes sense
Compared with most Canadian cities, St. John’s remains genuinely affordable — your dollar goes a lot further here than in Toronto, Vancouver, or even Halifax. The housing ranges from historic downtown homes to established family neighbourhoods to brand-new builds, so there’s something at most price points.
